There are about 7000 languages currently spoken in this world, and these languages show great diversity, but also recurrent similarities. There is an inherent tendency of human languages to change and diversify, but at the same time their structural diversity is restricted by the humans that use them. The research unit "Quantitative Language Comparison" investigates this world-wide linguistic variation and the historical processes underlying this diversity using quantitative methods. more
